BEVERLY HILLS, February 6, 2024—Gagosian is pleased to announce Made on Market Street, the first exhibition focused exclusively on works that Jean-Michel Basquiat produced in Los Angeles. Curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, the exhibition will be on view from March 7 to June 1, 2024. With exhibition design by Stefan Beckman, Made on Market Street features loans from the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat; Nicola Erni Collection, Steinhausen, Switzerland; the Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles; Museum Brandhorst, Munich; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and other public and private collections.
Between November 1982 and May 1984, Basquiat produced approximately a hundred paintings, numerous works on paper, and six silkscreen editions in Venice, California. For an artist closely affiliated with the New York art scene of the 1980s, Basquiat was extraordinarily prolific in Los Angeles

Made on Market Street reflects on this consequential era by bringing together nearly thirty works—several of which are among his most important paintings. Larry Gagosian notes, “Los Angeles has always been a great city for artists and Jean-Michel seemed to find it a refreshing change from New York. While the immensity of his talent was immediately apparent, it was nonetheless a highlight of my own career to work with him, to introduce him to Los Angeles, and to witness the amazing impact that his art and legacy have made on our culture.”

Rosenberg & Co. is pleased to present Marguerite Louppe, the third and final of our series of small-format exhibitions highlighting the work of three superlative artists from our collection. Previous exhibitions in the series featured seminal street photographer Fred Stein and notable Contemporary artist Aude Herlédan. Though undeniably distinct, these artists personify a dedication to pioneering forms of expression and meticulous consideration of composition. Through the examination of their seminal oeuvres we are able to investigate the shared artistic sensibilities that have traversed mediums to define art of the last century.

Exploring Avedon’s Genius as a Maker of Icons, the Exhibition Opens January 22, 2024

Photography for me has always been a sort of double-sided mirror. The one side reflecting my subject, the

other reflecting myself.

Richard Avedon

PARIS, January 15, 2024—Gagosian is pleased to announce Iconic Avedon: A Centennial Celebration of Richard Avedon, at the gallery on rue de Ponthieu, Paris, from January 22 to March 2, 2024. The exhibition marks the centenary of Avedon’s birth in May 1923. Often attributed to his photographs, the word iconic applies equally to their maker, and is used here to illuminate his exceptional influence on culture today.

Soon after establishing his New York studio in the mid-1940s, Avedon developed an inventive, sophisticated, and instantly recognizable style. As a staff photographer for Harper’s Bazaar (1944–65), and later Vogue (1966–88), he produced many of the publications’ quintessential images. As Avedon’s reputation grew, the defining figures of the twentieth century—performers, writers, artists, intellectuals, and other notables—were drawn to see themselves through his lens. Avedon produced images that became synonymous with the legends of his sitters. Featuring his photographs of subjects both renowned and obscure, the exhibition highlights the innovative role Avedon played as a creator of icons.

Avedon’s most incisive portraits manifest his uncanny ability to elicit the singular vitality of his sitters, inscribing their charged essences—even those of the already famous—in decisive frames extracted from the larger arc of living history. His portrayals of Marian Anderson (1955), Marilyn Monroe (1957), Bob Dylan (1965), and the Beatles (1967) are as indelible as they are timeless. “It’s not the way

I ,” Harold Brodkey remarked about his portrait by Avedon, “but the way I .” With an unerring eye, impeccable timing, and a prescient sensibility, Avedon vaulted the models Dovima (1955), China Machado (1958), and Penelope Tree (1967) to the pinnacle of their profession. He also recorded incomparable images of Charlie Chaplin (1952),

On January 24, 2024, Opera Gallery London presented “Three Days in Dakar: A Dialogue with Ron Arad” moderated by Opera Gallery CEO Isabelle de La Bruyère featuring Ron Arad in conversation with Simon de Pury & Rolf Sachs. The panelists discussed Arad’s collaboration with Senegalese artisans–from metal workers to weavers–in Dakar, and how this journey impacted Arad’s creative practice and led him to create reworked versions of iconic pieces (such as his well-known 'The Big Easy’ armchair) using raw materials sourced in Dakar. Arad’s presentation also features a large-scale bookshelf piece titled ‘America Made in Africa’, ‘Salam Sofa’ and ‘Don’t Ya Tell Henri’ – all handcrafted using the metal from oil drums.

Opera Gallery opened their new gallery in the heart of London's historic Mayfair neighbourhood, at 65-66 New Bond Street on November 23, 2023. Ron Arad (British, b. Israel 1951) is acclaimed for his aesthetic and conceptual explorations of form, structure, and technology through the diverse nature of his work’s materiality and categorizations, from industrial design to sculpture to mixed media installations and beyond. The first major retrospective of his work titled ‘No Discipline,’ debuted in 2008 at the Pompidou Centre in Paris followed by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2009. In 2013 he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Stanley Whitney GAGOSIAN ParisSTANLEY WHITNEY

Dear Paris

January 10–February 28, 2024

GAGOSIAN GALLERY 9 rue de Castiglione, Paris https://gagosian.com/

Gagosian is pleased to announce the exhibition of Stanley Whitney’s painting Dear Paris (2023) at 9 rue de Castiglione, Paris, from January 10 to February 28, 2024.

Inspired by the artist’s extended stay in the French capital, Dear Paris is the latest of Whitney’s lyrical abstractions. Balancing systematic structure and expressive spontaneity, he composed the painting in his characteristic manner, one roughly rectilinear block at a time, starting at the top left and progressing in rows across and down the canvas. Whitney forms each shape with energetic brushwork, choosing its vivid hues and shaping its boundaries in relation to its predecessors. The painting’s subtly shifting freehand geometry is further demarcated by linear bands between its rows that both divide and unify the composition.

Pursuing abstraction since the 1970s, Whitney established his mature style in the 1990s while living and working in Rome. The compositional framework he employs allows him the freedom to improvise, facilitating the emergence of surprising chromatic harmonies and dynamic visual rhythms. The artist’s wide-ranging influences include the polyphonic call and response of jazz, the transformative effect of light cast on historic buildings, the traditions of American quiltmaking, and artists from Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian to Giorgio Morandi.

Whitney’s recent residency in Paris offered him the sustained opportunity to observe the city’s architecture and urban fabric, and to connect with its expansive cultural history. As he observes:

There’s a history of African Americans going to Paris that dates back to after the First World War. Jazz musicians, writers, and artists like Beauford Delaney, James Baldwin, and more recently, Ed Clark, went to Paris for a creative freedom they couldn’t find in the United States. I’ve always wanted to spend more time in Paris, and in 2023, I finally did so. It was incredible to be in the city where so many of the great artists of the twentieth century, artists who were integral to my development as a painter, had lived and worked. In Paris, there’s a play between different periods in a long history; you just don’t have that in the States.

Dear Paris coincides with Stanley Whitney: How High the Moon, the artist’s first comprehensive retrospective, organized by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, New York. The exhibition will be on view from February 9 to May 27, 2024, before traveling to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2024–25), and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2025). Spanning the entirety of Whitney’s career, How High the Moon traces the evolution of his practice through paintings, drawings, prints, and sketchbooks. VOIR DANS LIRE LA SUITE le texte en Français

Art Concret Reliefs | Léon Tutundjian September 28 – December 22, 2023

Léon Tutundjian, installation view

Léon Tutundjian, Sans titre, 1929. Relief on a two-leveled panel. The Armenian born artist Léon Tutundjian began his artistic education studying ceramics at the Istanbul School of Fine Arts. After arriving in Paris in the early 1920's, Tutundjian found work as a potter, which afforded him the financial ability to explore the Parisian avant-garde circles and cultivate his singular style. Throughout his lifetime, Tutundjian consistently fell back on his skills as a ceramicist for financial support, and despite seemingly abandoning pottery in his personal practice, the principles of ceramic production fostered a material dedication that remained central to his artistic practice throughout his oeuvre.

Tutundjian's emphasis on material is evident in the Tachisme techniques he explored in his early works on paper. This dedication, however, is most apparent in the wood and steel reliefs he created during the early stages of the Art Concret movement. Through these three-dimensional constructions, Tutundjian utilized a series of steel cylinders and bars to form cantilever compositions that exemplified a severe set of aesthetic ideals—later summarized by the Art Concret movements foundational text.

PIERRE SOULAGESPIERRE SOULAGES Peinture 162 x 114 cm, 17 avril 1972 Oil on canvas 162 x 114 cm | 63.8 x 44.9 in

"One day I was painting, black had invaded the entire surface of the canvas, without shapes, without contrasts, without transparencies.
In this extreme I saw in a way the negation of black.
My instrument was no longer black, but this secret light coming from black."

Pierre Soulages

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of the artist Pierre Soulages. He was 102 years old, and leaves an immense legacy. Our condolences to his wife, Colette, who accompanied him for so many years. One of the greatest painters of our time, but mostly a soul in search of the absolute, through his relentless work on the depth and luminosity of the color black. This passion had seized him, as a child, in front of the prehistoric steles of the Museum of Rodez, where he was born. Or even, in Conques, the 11th century abbey, as a child, where years later he would create incredible stained glass windows (1992 - 1994). It was at that moment that the certainty of art and his vocation to paint had come to him. The architecture of the abbey of Sainte-Foy impressed him, just like a vision. Painting, engraving, lithography, he declined on all mediums his obsession with black, digging deep in what had marked his childhood. "The things that were fraternal to me, the earth, the old wood, the stones, the wet iron, all these rough things certainly marked me. I have always preferred them to pure and lifeless materials."

Light and darkness, rough and smooth, matte and shiny: Soulages was the painter of contrast, which found its incarnation in abstraction and his Outrenoir - beyond black, to light.
"Soulages was one of the most innovative painters of the 20th century, a remarkable artist and extraordinary person. He will be missed but his work will undoubtedly live on."

In honour of this significant milestone, Opera Gallery is proud to pay homage to one of Spain's most prominent artistic figures of the 20th century. The exhibition Saura, Pintar como querer meticulously curates a collection of his works, boasting over 50 pieces on paper and approximately a dozen captivating canvases. Within this remarkable assembly, we explore some of his renowned series, including "Auto-da-fé", "Heads", "Crucifixions", "Ladies", "Nudeslandscapes", "Crowds", "Shrouds", and "Goya's Dog". To further illuminate his creative journey, we proudly showcase 19 of his most iconic posters alongside these exquisite artworks.

To celebrate the opening of our new space in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's passing, Galerie AB - Agnès Aittouares is delighted to present an exhibition showcasing Pablo Picasso's drawings created from 1942 to 1971.

Join us for the "PICASSO. La force du trait" exhibition, which is accompanied by a comprehensive catalog.

Virgin and Child with Saint Hanan and Saint Johanna the Baptist (after Leonardo da Vinci), Tirtzah Bassel, 61 x 82 cm, huile sur toile, 2023Tirtzah BASSEL | Little Deaths

Starting Sunday le dimanche 15 octobre, de 14h à 18h.

Starting Sunday October 15, from 2pm to 6pm.

Exposition personnelle du 14 octobre au 25 novembre 2023

Solo show from October 14 to November 25, 2023

The title surprises, but Tirtzah Bassel explains and immediately sets the tone of the exhibition: «'Little Deaths" refers to an euphemism for the orgasm» The female orgasm to be precise, the artist's aim being to tackle images and models forged by patriarchy. For this, she designs new symbols and rethinks the issue of gender, sexuality and social models. «When a woman knows the source of her pleasure, she moves in the world in a fundamentally different way» she shares.

The 10-hectare wine estate located in Fréjus exhibits the artist's works until September 15th. The "Closing Evening Rose" will take place on August 31st.

The Clos des Roses vineyard embodies this symbiosis between wine and art. Like the great master artists inspired by the divine nectar, this wine estate evokes the thousand-year-old heritage where wine was considered an almost celestial creation, freed from constraints.

Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to present a selection of works by Melis Buyruk, Alaattin Efe, Naeemeh Kazemi, Maryam Lamei, Arash Nazari, and Behrang Samadzadegan for the 18th Edition of Contemporary Istanbul, booth T7-09.

Melis Buyruk is a Turkish artist born in Gölcük in 1984. Her large-scale floral ceramic sculptures depart from contained, categorical forms of pottery, and celebrate the traditionally feminized discipline. Buyruk graduated from the Ceramic Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Selçuk University in 2007, and has exhibited across Turkey, in New York City, and Dubai. Melis Buyruk identifies and subtly blends patterns of vegetation and the natural world, creating porcelain flower fields. They are disorienting, as they evoke both artificiality and illusion in a play on logic. While strikingly realistic and incredibly meticulous, the porcelain flowers are unfeasibly monochrome, hybrid, and eerily level, suggesting an alien environment. Fluctuating between boundaries of reality and surreality, her work reminds the viewer of our fractured and disjointed relationship with nature, and provokes a double consciousness.

Behrang Samadzadegan is an Iranian artist, curator, and professor. In his works, Behrang seeks to probe the possibility (or impossibility) of representing truth, identity, and history within the framework of aesthetic laws and to challenge the capacity of the image for displaying these concepts. As a scholar and curator, he enjoys discovering and studying new artistic phenomena and believes in rethinking and challenging the established rules and requirements of art. Painting has been Samadzadegan's main focus. The subject matters of his works are drawn from images and narratives of contemporary Iranian history, which he combines with fictional stories and the aesthetics of painting. His goal, however, is not to represent historical narratives. The image of history, he believes, is a personal matter created under the influence of visual and aesthetic stereotypes, a combination of confusion, chaos, and a futile quest for reaching unattainable truth.

DOCTOR-DOC-DR.-„HIGH NOON" IS BACK!

New York, NY – Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to announce artist Naeemeh Kazemi's solo show 'La La Land' opening on September 7, 2023.
Predominately a sculptor, Naeemeh Kazemi began painting in 2020 when the lockdown started since she could not get to her studio. She worked on these magical canvases in her one bedroom apartment in Iran,

which helped her escape the confinement of quarantine and transported her to fantastical places. Living in Iran, Kazemi has had to take creative approaches to her meanings through symbols, so as to not get in trouble with the Iranian government. Her themes of environmental and virus anxiety, feminism, and humanity are disguised in her enchanting paintings through tokens and motifs of the natural world, classical paintings, and quotidian objects.

In her most recent "La La Land" series, she depicts a world that is intertwined yet fragmented. It is as if familiar pieces float strangely in space. In her complex yet highly composed paintings, Kazemi ponders the questions "Could the whole history of the world be a mere misunderstanding?" and "Is it possible that man, with all his discoveries, developments, culture, religion, and global wisdom is just lingering on only to the outward of life?" This series reflects Kazemi's feelings and anxieties towards the world, exacerbated by the Covid pandemic quarantine instated since March 2020. She says, "I'm incredibly scared because I know we will soon annihilate this enlivening life- giving planet. A planet that soon gets a shell from skulls, bones, and dead machines. No one can do anything for her. We lost the game!" Kazemi creates an oasis sheltered from these fears in this series. A "La La Land," clearly fictitious, but serving as a safe haven from the uncertain world.

Her work aims to reflect her constant state of questioning, anxiety, and interrogation with herself. She says "tense dreamy moments occur, which rushes blood to my cheeks." The viewer can see these feelings depicted in the flourishing flora and fauna and bright, enchanting colors. But then, "a moment later, silent, unsure, tired, and depressed." These juxtaposed feelings are sensed in the canvas through the lingering portraits- eyes hidden, hands floating, and plants tangled in a web. Ultimately, through these symbols, themes, and meanings, Kazemi is questioning life itself. For Kazemi, her works are not set in a final reality. She explores the system of meanings and understands that it is constantly changing and new realities are born every day. While first brought upon by the uncertainties of social and personal health by the pandemic, her investigation of finding meaning in life remains true for past, present, and future generations.

"I have a philosophy. I do not want to make negative pictures about people, and so I do everything I can to help make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. That is what is going to control your picture, because you are alone if your subject is not with you. And that’s the simple answer to getting a good picture. »

Douglas KIRKLAND

TRAIT D'UNION
Pepe HIDALGO & Maxwell STEVENS
Curated by Arin Frut
 Tbilisi, Georgia
April 22nd - June 21st 2023

Galerie bruno massa is thrilled to introduce to international audience TRAIT D'UNION with PEPE HIDALGO & MAXWELL STEVENS and curated by ARIN FRUT.

TRAIT D'UNION draws a line between two very different universes from North America, one is based on Spanish culture & dissipated folklore inherited by Pablo Picasso, Cubism or Juan Gris, the other one is more constructed and sophisticated with MAXWELL STEVENS's detailed oil, quasi-architectural, even for his abstracts.

PEPE HIDALGO is a Canadian artist with Spanish origins born in 1953 who lives and works in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. An important purpose in his work is that it can speak for itself. When we sit, look, and listen, we often find meaning and understanding in what is in front of us. Imagery, symbolism, color, texture, shape, and volume are used to express his thoughts and feelings. Many of his paintings narrate a story, experience, or thought he wants to share with the audience. Just as each individual has their interpretation of events, viewers have their own interpretation depending on their life experiences. Pepe's work is abstract and figurative narrative. For a painting to be narrative the artist needs to incorporate elements the viewer can identify, this allows them to participate in the narrative of the painting. The paintings are open so the viewer can penetrate the artwork and feel as if they are the creator themselves. This allows people to have different interpretations and give their own meaning to his painting. His objective is finally for people to have a personal and unique experience with his marvelous art.

SALVADOR DALI   ULTRALOCAL / ULTRAGLOBAL

Mayoral, Paris, Matignon

To open 2023, Galerie Lelong & Co. is exhibiting a collection of recent works by the British artist David Nash. For 50 years, he has been guided by a creative instinct obedient to his preferred subject: trees. Often taking the form of sculptures – sometimes monumental, sometimes humbler in format – David Nash adapts to the form dictated by the trunk or branch to conceive his sculptures and installations. The other facet of his oeuvre, drawings on paper, similarly embodies this close awareness of the material. Although he does not eschew plant forms altogether, in this exhibition he favours minimal abstractions with rich colours that sing joyously.

David Nash (born in 1945 at Esher, England) lives and works in Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales. He has been a member of the Royal Academy since 1999. His work, widely represented in the major museums of Europe, America, Australia and Japan, has been the subject of retrospectives at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and at Kew Gardens in England, as well as at the National Museum Cardiff and at Towner Eastbourne.

OTI GALLERY :
Over the Influence Gallery was founded in Hong Kong in 2015 and expanded to Los Angeles in 2018 and Bangkok in 2022. We are thrilled to announce our forth gallery location in Paris opening with the show of Thai artist Gongkan. The gallery represents an international roster of emerging and established artists working across different mediums and disciplines. OTI is dedicated to championing artists who challenge traditional approaches to studio practice and presents a dynamic program that explores the intersection of contemporary art, architecture, design, music, fashion, and other forms of visual expression.

ASIA NOW :
For the 2022 edition of Asia Now, Over the Influence would like to present for the first time a solo show exhibition that invites all of us to rethink about our relationship with our everyday objects.
The artist present individual bodies of work that speak in conversation with one another, creating an exhibition that is witty and playful. The show allows viewers to escape into the same fantasy world we did as children, with the humour and satire that adulthood necessitates.

THE ARTIST | SOOYOUNG CHUNG :
For the artist Sooyoung Chung, from South Korea this series presents her most recent series of works and direction in her creative process. In the past year, the artist worked exclusively in linen canvas and focused on this series titled “ Biographical Object”. Each work has a simple number as a reference of our daily objects. Chung’s paintings in this series work in conjunction to each other to create a feeling of one painting - so much so that one can even see pieces as an unique wall of ordinary objects. This intentional choice continues to show how intertwined these series are. His pieces feature 2D versions of the artist's 3D figures.

Barakat Gallery New London Location

Dear Friends, Clients, and Patrons,

After almost 20 years, earlier this month we moved out of our Gallery on 58 Brook Street to make way for the re-development of the entire block.

We have not gone much far away though, and we relocated in a much larger space down the road in 31 Brook St, W1K 4HF, Mayfair, London.

In the last few months we have been considerably busy organising this move, and I am sure that the collectors and art lovers who are reading this email will understand the challenges and the excitement of organising a new space.

For my entire life I have always treasured antiquities for their ability to tell stories and in the last few months during the move our curators and staff have treasured the opportunity to caress every single artefact readying it for the move. It has been an incredibly inspiring experience as we have been able to think about every artefact anew, and we are looking forward to share our enthusiasm with you.

Personally, I hope to be able to welcome many of you personally in the new location.

Wishing each and everyone of you to be in the best of health,
Fayez Barakat
President

KARINE TAILLANDIER GALERIE MAKOWSKI PARISKarine TAILLANDIER

Karine a 50 ans, mi-Parisienne, mi-provinciale.

Artist, Allison Zuckermann in her studio, with artworks from "A Taste of Mille-Feuilles" show

Allison Zuckerman's large scale canvases take a selection of female- orientated images from art history and, through the application of oil and acrylic paint, crystal rhinestones, and embedded archival CMYK ink, fuse them together in collage. Her work juxtaposes colourful pop imagery with a historical aesthetic. Through this marriage of epochs Zuckerman seeks to reclaim female figures from a male-dominated art historical canon, and does so with palpable excitement, humour and love.

Allison Zuckerman (b. 1990 Harrisburg, PA) lives and works in New York, NY.

The exhibition aims to bring the contemporary production of Nicolas Lefeuvre closer to the Modern Masters such as Masson and Matisse. A common discourse characterized by an audacity, a search for liberation of the gesture expressed in the symbolic function of the color, the rhythm of forms. The exhibition invites to discover a dialogue on abstraction and a subtle aesthetic experience.

 WHAT

JM Art Management present an exclusive online Artsy exhibition for Czech art and fashion photographer Lukas Dvorak. The show is replete with Dvorak's passionate, erotic, and intense photography.

Lukas Dvorak captured photos of the surrounding nature, considering it his best source of inspiration and contrast. Dvorak believes that women should be exposed in the same way as nature does, demonstrating how one might act without needing to put up a front. This thought serves as the return to the birth of Venus, a reference to the original woman.

Lukas combines his models' beautiful, feminine curves with an astonishing, raw, and untamed backgrounds by presenting them with breathtaking scenery. His scenes provide a sense of simplicity and purity through the interaction of nature and nudity.

The artist characterizes his style as straightforward. Primary, straight lines must control the three aspects of lighting, position, and facial expression. His works show little sign of the enormous effort frequently required to achieve the correct pose. As he noted in an interview, respecting the woman's beauty is the first thing to do to capture her in her most spectacular and finest form. The most crucial criterion for Dvorak is a natural appearance; he shows his images in a timeless, pure style, devoting himself to the female nude with poise and creativity. The models have a natural appearance and a strong sense of character.

LOS ANGELES
SOMEBODY
group exhibition 10 September - 1 October 2022

Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Somebody, a figurative group exhibition curated by Dasha Matsuura. Each of the eight artists featured explore abstraction and stylization of the human form, depicting the physical and emotional within their subjects.

Capturing the essence of ourselves, peers and family have been at the root of art practices throughout history. From hyper-realism to abstracted forms, the artists highlighted in Somebody illustrate familial histories and memories, current internal states and hopes for the future. Grappling with identity, the inherent value of the subject and their presence within the painted space, each work moves beyond the physical body to unpack the human experience.

Utilizing their work to paint the reality they see or would like to see, the artists affirm and underscore the importance of representation or reflection of one's self in art. Painting is used as a means to record the influential and everyday, to allow reverence that you are someone worth documenting and inhabiting space. That you are Somebody.

Artists and Their Books

On View

Illustration has often been considered the stepchild of literature, strictly an accompaniment which at best serves as a diversionary respite from the intellectual and emotional triumph of words. But along with the more immediately apparent 20th Century revolutions in the plastic arts, film, performance, music and literature, a quiet but equally profound alteration has taken place in the world of illustrated books and publications. Ubu Gallery’s current exhibition, “Artists and Their Books”, is an attempt to gain the recognition of a wider, informed audience for this essential melding of art and literature. We are presenting drawings, collages and photographs created explicitly for or in connection with books and publications produced from the 1920s to 1960s, with a heavy dose of Surrealism. Some of these books and publications are unique, some limited edition, some mass produced. But virtually all of the art generated fcr these books and publications was created by “fine” artists and is exceedingly rare, significant and collectible. Practically every ma|or artist of the 20th Century has collaborated in the creation of one or more of such works and often these artists supplied their own unique voice as well, rivaling the achievements of recognized literary giants. In many cases, illustration has occupied such an important place in the total oeuvre of the artist that no student of art history, connoisseur or astute collector can afford to turn a blind eye.

Hans Bellmer, Man Ray, Claude Cahun, Georges Hugnet, Jindrich Štyrský and Unica Zürn are among the heavyweights on view.

Happy Valentine's Day

Roman marble Cupid or Eros, Ca 1st to 2nd Century AD. The winged god riding a dolphin, holding its dorsal fin with his left hand, the dolphin resting on a base and baring its teeth. A lovely and large ancient sculpture with good original polish and encrustation. Size is 27 inches (68.6cm) high, 17 inches wide. Provenance: Ex Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth Gladstone, New York City acquired from Galerie Francois Antonovich, Paris France, 1984Dear Ancient Art Lover,

In Classical Greek mythology the god of love, Eros (Roman Cupid), was the love child of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, passion and procreation, and Ares, the infamous god of war. It was Eros who lit the flame of love and desire in the hearts of gods and humans. There are many theories as to why, throughout antiquity, Eros was often depicted riding a dolphin: in antiquity, as today, dolphins were perceived as affectionate towards humans. They were also symbols of divine protection and guidance, and may have represented how swiftly love moves.

Art for Eternity is proud to present a noteworthy, high quality new acquisition. This Roman marble rendition of Eros, riding a dolphin, is a perfect Valentine's gift for you or your beloved. We also have an array of beautiful ancient gems and jewelry selected for the occasion.

Exposition du 12 février au 2 avril 2022

Dutko l'Ile Saint-Louis
4 rue de Bretonvilliers
Paris 4e

'Keith Haring, Art in action Opera Gallery ParisKeith Haring, Art in action', an immersive solo exhibition at Opera Gallery Miami running until December 19. Undeniably one of the most influential artists of his time, the exhibition draws inspiration from the various iconic spaces Haring inhabited. Beyond just drawings, Keith Haring's art opened dialogue on love, sexuality, war, politics, AIDS and drug awareness. Conversations that continued throughout his prolific art career.

"Art is nothing if you don't reach every segment of the people"
Keith Haring

27 Nov. - 19 Dec. 2021

Opera Gallery is delighted to present ‘Keith Haring: Art in Action’, an immersive solo exhibition that celebrates Haring and his legacy, by remembering the spaces and places made special by Haring and his iconic drawings. Undeniably one of the most influential artists of his time, Haring shook up the art world one street drawing at a time and the buzz never really went away.

This is remembrance, an ode to an 80s New York full of possibilities, dreams and unstoppable creativity. Right in the center of this booming street culture was a group of artists who believed in art as a response to life itself, as a means of representing its grandness and intricacies in the frenetic rhythm of the time. Keith Haring was an integral part of this movement by occupying and engaging with underground scenes, creating art for causes that were close to humanity.

The streets and subway stations were Haring’s canvases, as he started devoting himself to lining the walls with his unmissable imageries and universal line-work, alive with playful kinetic energy. The idea was simple - to bring art closer to people, to create a pictorial vocabulary that can be comprehended by all, regardless of age, language and background. Beyond just drawings, Haring’s art symbolised his stance on post-modern currents of the time and opened dialogues on love, sexuality, war, politics, AIDS and drug-awareness - conversations that continued through his prolific art career. The result was like a light in darker times, inspiring a whole generation of people to believe in art, life, and how both intertwined.

CHU TEH-CHUN

Chu Teh-Chun (1920 - 2014) is widely considered one of the most significant Chinese artists. He started his career in Hangzhou, China in the 1930s and eventually moved to Paris in 1955. Throughout the 20th century, his abstract paintings were exhibited all over the world, charming critics and art lovers with his ingenious blend of Chinese and French cultural elements and symbols.

Gracefully pushing back the limits of the real and the unreal, his paintings, which are vibrant and full of movement, have a profound sense of depth, poetry and musicality. Although his work demonstrates the stylistic freedom of mid-century movements such as art informel and abstract expressionism, Chu always retained the rigorous technical brushwork he learned as a student in mainland China.

"I came to Paris in the spring of 1955 to find the answer to a profound aspiration. I had to discover my own way, through my knowledge and practice of Western painting"

HERMANN NITSCH OPERA GALLERY LONDONHERMANN NITSCH

14 October - 14 November 2021

Opera Gallery London is pleased to present a solo exhibition featuring recent paintings as well as historic works by Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch.

Considered a key figure in Viennese Actionism of the 1960s, Hermann Nitsch continues to use a radical method of painting, essentially through his creation of the Orgien Mysterien Theatre, a concept of ceremonial performance art comparable to Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk (total art work). This total art form calls to all five human senses and advocates for a profound existentialist reflection. Hermann Nitsch creates his paintings using his entire body. Therefore, they are simultaneously the origin and the result of his performances. Using or applying oil or acrylic paint of a certain hue, he spreads it on canvas using unconventional tools as well as his hands, feet and whole body movements. Through these actions, Nitsch demonstrates his energetic, spiritual, sensual and passionate persona. Chaos and violence, which accompany his work, are in fact a celebration of life and mirror the human soul.
